Galesburg, IL

After a three-week absence, the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team is back among others receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II rankings, released Monday afternoon.

The Chargers (19-6 overall, 3-2 Arrowhead Conference) earned two points in this week’s voting and were one of six teams outside the top 20 to get votes. Sandburg has received votes in seven of 11 polls during the regular season.

The Chargers picked up a pair of home victories last week (92-72 on Wednesday against Knox JV and 83-69 on Friday against St. Ambrose JV) and have won five in a row overall.

Sandburg is 10th in the country in scoring defense, allowing 66.7 points per game. The Chargers also ranked seventh nationally in assists, at 21.1 per contest. Sandburg also has been one of the top shooting teams this season in NJCAA Division II, ranking 18th in field goal percentage (48.7 percent), 13th in 3-point shooting (37.2 percent) and 16th in free-throw percentage (72.2 percent).

The Chargers’ six losses this season have come against teams with a combined winning percentage of .770 (107-32). That group includes two teams ranked in the top four of this week’s Division II poll (No. 2 Milwaukee Area Tech and No. 4 South Suburban) and two Division I programs (Highland and Sauk Valley).

Sandburg begins the second half of its Arrowhead Conference schedule when it travels to face Highland at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Cougars won the first meeting between the teams 96-86 on Jan. 9 in Galesburg.
